My Compaq Presario V2000 Laptop is acting up and I need help! It’s keyboard is no longer fully functioning and I’m having a hard time using it. The non-functioning keys are: Insert, Delete, Home, Page Up, Page Down, End, Left Arrow, and Right Arrow. I use these keys - especially delete, home, page up and down, end, and the arrows keys a lot and it’s pretty tough typing without them functioning. Below is a photo of said keys:

As you can see, all of them are on the right side of the keyboard so my guess is that a single problem affected all of them. I’d be glad to know how to fix them so if someone who knows the fix happens to stumble across this page, kindly leave me a comment below. I already know how to disassemble the laptop so that wouldn’t be a problem. Anyone who happens to come across the same problem - please also leave a message and tell me what happened.
Of course I can take it to the service center but that means perhaps a week of no work for me and that’s pretty tough… not to mention the amount that they would charge me to fix it. I’d prefer fixing it myself. My worry though is that the motherboard might be damaged - in which case I guess I just have to take it to a service center. I hope that it just needs a good cleaning.
Wish me luck!

Update (08/12/2008): After almost one year of not doing anything on this laptop besides cleaning it, I finally decided to buy a replacement keyboard on eBay (seller was techtoys888) which got delivered to me today (August
(our local post office received it last August 7 days after). The item was shipped to me last July 30 so that’s 13 days of waiting which to me is acceptable. Cost was $18.48 for the item + $2.50 for shipping insurance for a mere total of $20.98. That’s way cheaper than getting it fixed in the service center.
I then downloaded the maintenance and service guide PDF file from HP for my Compaq Presario V2000 laptop and replaced the keyboard. Replacing it was easy and straightforward. All you need are some screwdrivers and the ability to follow instructions. It’s now working flawlessly with all the keys working as they should be.

Hi Mike! I’m having a similar problem as you have right now. Some keys aren’t repsonsive, specifically the backspace, backslash, enter, up and down keys. I also have the same laptop as you. It’s been 2 years since I bought my laptop. One day, those keys just stopped functioning. I was wondering what happened to your laptop. How did you get it fixed? What’s the cause of the problem? I’m lost…I tried scanning for spyware and updating keyboard drivers but to no avail. Of course I could also take it to the service center, but just like you, I prefer to fix it myself. Any help will be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi RGT,
Honestly, I haven’t fixed it yet. The only solution that I’ve seen so far is to purchase a replacement keyboard which I haven’t tried yet.

Thanks for the quick response! I thought you fixed it already. Did you try taking it to the service center?
July 20th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Nope, haven’t taken it to the service center yet. But I might this month if I can’t find a replacement keyboard.

Oh okay! So you’ve been using your laptop with those non-functioning keys all this time? Hehe. Anyway, I’ll update you when I get my laptop fixed. Thanks for your help.

Yep, all this time I have been using it with those non-functioning keys. They’re not that critical especially if you’re just browsing the web and I’ve learned to use key Fn-key combinations. I still want to get it fixed though. Nothing beats a fully working laptop after all.

I went to the HP service center…They told me they needed to replace the entire keyboard, which would cost around P5000. Plus, there would be additional charges for labor and diagnostics. So all in all, the cost would be around P8000.

Wow! That’s a bit costly. I think I’d rather order a replacement keyboard on ebay and replace it myself. Are you pushing through with the service center?
July 27th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Exactly! I think a replacement keyboard is around $25 if you order online. You can also check youtube.com for instructions how to replace keyboards. So yeah, I think we could do this by ourselves and save ourselves a lot of money.

Yep, you’re right. I’ll try placing an order for a replacement keyboard this week and see if I can fix it. I’ll post updates here.

Thanks! I’ll do the same.

Hi RGT,
I finally replaced my keyboard. See update on the original article above.
